December 10, 2009 - On the International Human Rights Day several human rights organizations together with several NGOs organized an event in the UN Building to address sexual orientation and human rights violations.
A powerful statement by the Holy See was delivered at this event. Amongst other things the Holy See opposes discriminatory penal legislation against homosexual persons and calls upon all States and individuals to respect the rights of all persons. According to the human rights defenders from Uganda and Honduras who took part in the panel discussion, this statement is very helpful in combating homophobia which is often inspired by religious leaders in their country.
